Technical SEO Checklist for B2B Websites in 2026

GTM Engine Team · 8 min read · 16 Mar 2025

Technical SEO is the foundation everything else sits on. Weak technical foundations make content and link building less effective. Here's the complete technical checklist we use when auditing B2B websites.

Crawlability and Indexation

  • Robots.txt allows crawling of all important pages; blocks staging/admin/private sections
  • No valuable pages blocked by noindex tags unintentionally
  • XML sitemap present, valid, submitted to Google Search Console
  • GPTBot and PerplexityBot allowed (check robots.txt for AI crawler blocks)
  • No crawl traps (infinite pagination, calendar infinite loops)
  • Orphan pages (no internal links) identified and addressed

Core Web Vitals

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds on mobile
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) under 200ms
  • All pages measured via CrUX data in Search Console, not just lab data

Site Architecture

  • All important pages within 3 clicks of the homepage
  • Consistent URL structure (no mixed /blog and /articles patterns)
  • Canonical tags on all pages, correct self-referencing canonicals
  • Redirect chains no longer than 2 hops
  • No redirect loops
  • HTTPS on all pages, no mixed content warnings

On-Page Technical

  • Unique title tags on every page (50-60 characters)
  • Meta descriptions on all key pages (150-160 characters)
  • Single H1 per page, matches intent
  • Images have descriptive alt text
  • No duplicate content issues (use Siteliner or Screaming Frog)
  • Pagination implemented with proper rel="next"/"prev" if applicable

Structured Data

  • Organization schema on homepage and About page
  • Article/BlogPosting schema on all blog content
  • FAQPage schema on content with Q&A sections
  • BreadcrumbList schema on all inner pages
  • No schema validation errors (test via Google's Rich Results Test)

International (if applicable)

  • Hreflang implemented correctly for multi-language/multi-region sites
  • Correct country-targeting in Search Console
Run this checklist quarterly. Technical debt accumulates silently — a redirect chain added here, a noindex left on there — and compounds into ranking suppression over time.
