How to Improve Domain Authority: The 90-Day Blueprint

GTM Engine Team · 9 min read · 17 Nov 2025

Domain Authority (DA) — Moz's metric — and Domain Rating (DR) — Ahrefs' equivalent — are proxy metrics for how much trust search engines place in your domain. Higher DA correlates strongly with ranking ability. Here's the 90-day blueprint we've used to lift DA for B2B clients.

Understanding What Moves DA

DA is primarily driven by backlink quality and quantity. More links from high-authority domains moves DA up. But in 2026, quality matters more than quantity. One link from TechCrunch or Harvard Business Review moves DA more than 100 links from low-quality directories. Google has become extremely good at identifying unnatural link patterns, so quality-first is the only sustainable approach.

The 90-Day Blueprint

Days 1-15: Audit and Baseline

  • Run a full backlink audit in Ahrefs or Semrush
  • Identify toxic links and disavow if necessary
  • Document current DA/DR and referring domain count
  • Identify top 20 competitor backlink sources (these are your targets)

Days 16-30: Quick Win Link Acquisition

  • Claim all unlinked brand mentions (Ahrefs Content Explorer)
  • Submit to high-quality industry directories
  • Reach out to integration partners for mutual links
  • Fix any broken external links pointing to your site (reclaim link equity)

Days 31-60: Digital PR Campaign

  • Commission original research your industry will want to cite
  • Build a data-backed industry report
  • Pitch to industry publications where your competitors are already featured
  • Target journalist databases for relevant story angles

Days 61-90: Scale and Consolidate

  • Guest posting on publications with DA 50+ in your industry
  • Skyscraper technique — improve and outreach to competitors' best-linked content
  • Resource page link building — find pages that link to your competitors
  • Measure uplift and plan next cycle

Realistic Expectations

A well-executed 90-day campaign typically yields 8-15 new high-quality referring domains and 3-8 DA points of uplift. DA 20→30 is faster than DA 50→60. Set expectations accordingly.

The fastest path to higher DA is a consistent digital PR program. Every major piece of original research you publish has the potential to earn dozens of high-authority links — and that compounding effect is what moves DA sustainably.
