Step 1: Keyword Gap Analysis

Find all keywords your competitors rank for that you don't. In Ahrefs: Content Gap tool with your top 3-5 competitors. The output is your keyword opportunity backlog — prioritize by traffic potential and commercial intent.

Step 2: Backlink Gap Analysis

Identify sites linking to your competitors but not to you. These are your most qualified link building targets — they've already shown willingness to link to content in your category. In Ahrefs: Link Intersect tool.

Step 3: Content Gap Analysis

What topics have your competitors written about that you haven't? What are they ranking for that you have no content to compete with? This content calendar populates your production roadmap for the next 6 months.

Step 4: Technical Comparison

How does your site speed, Core Web Vitals, and technical health compare? Use PageSpeed Insights and compare your CrUX scores against competitor domains. Sometimes the gap is purely technical.

Step 5: Authority Gap

Compare your DA/DR against competitors. If you're significantly below, link building is the lever. If you're comparable but ranking lower, content quality and relevance is the gap.
