Measuring AEO Success: Metrics That Actually Matter

AEO measurement is harder than SEO measurement — there's no equivalent of Google Search Console for AI citation tracking. But that doesn't mean measurement is impossible. Here's the framework we use for B2B clients.

Primary AEO Metrics

AI Citation Share

The most direct measure: for your top 20 buyer queries, how often does your brand appear in AI-generated answers? Track this manually monthly — run each query on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini and record whether you're cited. Tools like Profound and Otterly are automating this tracking as of 2026.

AI Referral Traffic

Google Analytics now segments ChatGPT and Perplexity as traffic sources. Track month-over-month growth in AI referral traffic as a proxy for citation volume. This undercounts citations (many users don't click through) but is reliable data you already have.

Share of Voice in AI Answers

Beyond "are we cited" — "how prominently?" First citation, second citation, and mentioned-in-passing are different levels of authority. Track position within AI answers for your most valuable queries.

Secondary Metrics

  • Featured snippet wins: Leading indicator for AI citations — track in Search Console
  • Topical coverage score: Number of cluster topics with 10+ pieces of content
  • Schema implementation rate: Percentage of pages with FAQPage and Article schema
  • Domain authority trend: Backlink quality and quantity growth

Reporting AEO to Leadership

The metric leadership understands is pipeline. Track whether AI-referred traffic converts differently than other organic traffic — typically it does, because users who found you via ChatGPT were specifically researching your category. If AI-referred visitors show higher intent signals (longer sessions, more pricing page visits), build that into your ROI case.

Measure what you can, track what you can't with proxies, and connect everything to pipeline. AEO measurement will mature fast — but don't wait for perfect data before building the program.
